Oral-Motor and Feeding Therapy

One of the most common myths about eating is that it is instinctive and easy.  Eating is quite a complex process that goes far beyond placing food in your mouth and swallowing.  Treatment of oral motor and feeding disorder is an organized approach for achieving adequate muscle strength, control, swallow function, respiration positioning and a balanced oral sensory system, all prerequisite to meeting nutritional needs.  Early feeding difficulties left unattended can contribute to more complex deficits seen in the toddler years and beyond.  Skills developed in early feeding  play an important role in speech development, as the same systems are key players in achieving intelligible speech.
